Rock Songs for Theologians

Over at Faith and Theology Kim Fabricius has assigned rock songs to various theologians. Some of my favorites:

St Irenaeus: “Long Road Out of Eden” (Eagles)

St. Francis of Assisi: “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg” (Temptations)

St Anselm: “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” (Rolling Stones)

C. S. Lewis: “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” (The Tokens)

Herbert McCabe: “Whiskey on the Rocks” (AC/DC)

Can you add to his list or perhaps suggest more appropriate titles? Feel free to expand beyond theologians (e.g., biblical characters, saints, heretics, TV evangelists and preachers, popular Christian authors, etc.), and feel free to expand beyond rock music.

Here are some possibilities I came up with:

St Elijah the Prophet: “Great Balls Of Fire” (Jerry Lee Lewis)

St Lazarus: “Back To Life” (Soul II Soul)

St Thomas the Apostle: “I’m A Believer” (Monkees)

St Paul the Apostle: “Blinded By The Light” (Bruce Springsteen)

St Augustine of Hippo: “I Can’t Help Myself” (Four Tops)

St John of the Ladder: “Stairway to Heaven” (Led Zeppelin)

St Dionysius the Areopagite: “God Only Knows” (Beach Boys)

St Gregory Palamas: “Ray of Light” (Madonna)

Martin Luther: “Just the Way You Are” (Billy Joel)

St Thérèse of Lisieux: “My Sweet Lord” (George Harrison)

Bishop John Shelby Spong: “Losing My Religion” (R.E.M.)

John Macquarrie: “Let It Be” (Beatles)

Robert W. Jenson: “The Times They Are a-Changin'” (Bob Dylan)

N. T. Wright: “We Are Family” (Sister Sledge)

John Zizioulas: “Everybody Needs Somebody to Love” (Solomon Burke)

Aidan Kavanagh: “Splish, splash” (Bobby Darin)

Hans Urs von Balthasar: “Bohemian Rhapsody” (Queen)

Fr Stephen Freeman: “Stop! In the name of love” (The Supremes)

I would have thought “My Sweet Lord” (George Harrison) would be more appropriate for Bede Griffiths OSB Cam.

  2. Dapper Dan says:

Joel Osteen: “It’s My Life” (Bon Jovi) – okay, he’s not a theologian, but it’s still funny. 😀

John Calvin: “Master of Puppets” (Metallica)

St. Peter: “Walking on the Water” (Creedence Clearwater Revival)

    This was hilarious fun! Thanks!
