I’ve become so caught up in worrying about the ultimate fate of humanity that I’ve almost forgotton the importance of the basic gospel messege – the crucifixion and ressurection of Jesus Christ.

It seems to me that preaching must be concerned with the gospel and the gospel alone: that is, the Incarnate Word, slain and risen, as “righteousness, holiness, and redemption” (1 Cor. 1:30). Our preachers should “know nothing but Christ and him crucified” (1 Cor. 2:2). The foolish wisdom of the Cross should be all that resounds from our pulpits. This would also make obvious the connection between pulpit and altar. From the former, we receive the crucified Lord by hearing; from the latter, we receive the crucified Lord by sacrament.
