i wonder who wrote this. Good thing i’m not their abbot. They’d be wasting away on 10 years of bread and water for it.
Those first two troparia don’t make any sense. *Why* should we ‘declare before all nations that he is our fervent intercessor’? Were the nations making trouble for St Aidan? Are they making trouble now, in some way that involves him? Even if so, is that clear in the verse? I mean, specifically with respect to St Aidan. Like, if I just came to your house unbidden, and announced out of the blue, ‘St Aidan is my intercessor!’, wouldn’t you think I was more than a little daft? Of course, if you were persecuting me, and i said, ‘St Aidan is my intercessor!’ you’d probably not believe me that he was, but at least it would make sense in the context, and there would be occasion for God to show it was true. Modern ‘hymnographers’ just grab ‘holy’ phrases out of books without a thought to what they mean. It’s just ‘religious talk’.
The second one says, ‘O Lindisfarne … since thou art exalted above the tides, raise us up to praise him.’ Since when did islands ‘raise’ people, even if one might (just a bit preciously, no?) say that they are somehow ‘exalted above the tides’? But more importantly, as rationale for Lindisfarne’s (alleged) power to ‘raise us up’ (those are not neutral words, in Christianity!), the mere fact that an island sticks out of the sea is seriously deficient.
And what is the point of that catalogue of islands by name, in the doxasticon? Do we list all the different places St Innocent visited, for example? It is enough to say, ‘islands’, or ‘journeys’, or other general expressions. Those who wish the details may consult the Vita. Otherwise it just looks like some kind of nationalism. Did you know that St Innocent visited Fort Ross, San Rafael, San Francisco, and passed through Atherton, Belmont, Brisbane, Burlingame, Colma, Daly City, East Palo Alto, El Granada, Foster City, Hillsborough, Half Moon Bay, La Honda, Menlo Park, Millbrae, Pacifica, Portola Valley, Redwood City, San Bruno, San Carlos, San Mateo, South San Francisco, and Woodside, on his way to San Jose, where he built a barrel organ for the Franciscans? Now, was that sentence about listing cities, or was my point to tell about what St Innocent did in San Jose?
Aidan was a great saint who deserves to be better known. But his merits certainly don’t need to be proclaimed by bad poetry and bad theology. Unfortunately this stuff is all too common in Orthodoxy today, given the rush of people anxious to manufacture a ‘Western Orthodoxy’ out of not really very thick air.
