Yannaras & Zizioulas on Divine Freedom

Somehow I missed Tom Belt’s article last month on divine freedom and the trinitarian identity of God: God free—to be or not to be? While I have not read much Yannaras (I’ve tried but he hasn’t clicked yet), I have read a good deal of Zizioulas. Tom raises good questions about the difficult notion that God was free not to have been Father, Son, and Spirit. I don’t get it. Tom doesn’t either. Are we in a position where we can even meaningfully ask the question?
