It’s not an understatement to say that “Justice” as a whole (and this quote in particular) was a life changer for me. I’ve never again quite felt at home in my own tradition since reading it.

For him, the unity of justice and mercy – and their “deservedness” (how scandalous!) – are understood only in light of the identity of God as loving Father and Creator, and the irrevocable worth and dignity bestowed freely on humanity as a result of being His creation. I admit to having difficulty believing it many days. That is where I think MacDonald is at his best (at least as far as his non-fiction goes) – in his axiomatic working out of the loving Fatherhood of God.

If you like this quotation, then please do read George MacDonald’s unspoken sermon “Justice.”

Fr. Aidan Kimel. Thank you so much for providing this link. I had never read George MacDonald, but this Sermon was powerful, thought-provoking, and beautiful.

I also recommend The Portal of the Mystery of Hope by Charles Peguy. Along with MacDonald, one of the few who suggests the loving Fatherhood of God with compelling artistry.

I’m reading Julian of Norwich’s Revelation of Love right now and she really emphasizes the loving Fatherhood and Motherhood of God. She definitely does not pit God’s justice against God’s mercy.
